Mail step by step

How to triage your inbox, snooze threads, write and send, and turn an e-mail into a task.

~8 min

The point of mail in Letos is an empty inbox without the stress: read each thread, decide, move on. This guide walks you through it.

1. Get your bearings in the folders

On the left are Inbox, Reminders, Archive, Sent and Drafts. The inbox is shared across all your mailboxes; with more than one, you can show just one.

2. Triage one thread

Select a thread and press a key. You can undo any action for a few seconds with Undo in the notice at the bottom.

Key Action
E Archive
# Delete
Z Snooze
P Remind me (in an hour)
U Mark as unread
⌘ Z Undo the last action

3. Snooze what you don’t want to deal with now

  • Snooze hides a thread and brings it back at the time you pick: In an hour, Tomorrow or Next Monday.
  • Remind me moves the thread to the Reminders folder and notifies you at the chosen time.

Set the morning hour for “tomorrow” and “Monday” in Settings → Mail preferences → Morning hour for snooze.

4. Turn an e-mail into a task

Above an open thread there’s a toolbar. Under Task you’ll find Create task from email and Task for a goal….

On the desktop and web you can also drag a message:

  • onto Today at a glance on the right → a task for today,
  • onto Tasks in the top bar → a task in the Inbox.

The task takes the e-mail’s text, a link back to it and its attachments. The message stays in your mail.

5. Write and send

  1. Start a new message with C or ⌘ N.
  2. Send with ⌘ Enter.
  3. After sending you have a moment to Undo. Set the window length in Settings → Mail preferences → Undo-send window.

Need to send later? Next to Send pick In an hour, This evening, Tomorrow, Next Monday or Custom time….

A few extras

  • Sender rules (Settings → Rules) can automatically archive, delete, spam or make tasks from incoming mail.
  • Search opens with the / key. It spans mail, tasks and calendar and knows operators like from:, has:attachment and is:unread.
  • Reply snippets go in by typing ;shortcut and a space.
